2013 Animal Feeds Formulation Training Course

The 2013 KIRDI Animal Feeds Formulation Training Course was held between the 24th to 28th June 2013 and organised by Kirdi enterprise services and kirdi's chemical engineering division at KIRDI headquarters.

Animal feeds training in progress

                                       Animal feeds training in progress.

It has been recognized that nutrition is the most important environmental factor that influences the ability of animals to reach their genetic potential for growth, proper maintenance, reproduction and longevity. Therefore, it is essential that small scale / commercial farmers and animal feed entrepreneurs have detailed information in order to make quality feeds for the animals.

To this end, KIRDI’s Chemical Engineering Division successfully organized this five (5) day training course on Animal Feed Formulation. Capacity building was undertaken for thirty five (35) participants drawn from the whole country (Garissa, Nyanza, Kisumu, Western, Eastern, Central and Coast parts of Kenya).

This course targeted entrepreneurs/farmers/organizations engaged in feed manufacturing or potential entrepreneurs in feed manufacturing. The required level of education was at least KCSE with a basic understanding of computers.

Animal feeds computer training session

                                      Animal feeds computer training session.

The resource persons were Prof. Gachuiri and Prof. Mbugua from the University of Nairobi.

General Objective of the course:To help foster growth of new MSMIs in animal feed sector and also enable livestock farmers to undertake proper feed formulation for increased production and improved income streams.

Specific Objectives:

  • To equip the farmers and entrepreneurs on basic knowledge of various feedstuff and animal nutrition.
  • To teach farmers and entrepreneur to understand and interpret animal nutrition analysis reports.
  • To train farmers on feed formulation using locally available feedstock.

Workshop on Water, Food and Energy Nexus

kirdibfzwatercapacts

WORKSHOP ON WATER, FOOD AND ENERGY NEXUS
15th – 18th October 2012, RED COURT HOTEL @ RED CROSS HQ, SOUTH C.

Water, food and energy form a basic requirement for human existence. As populations continue to grow and economies keep enlarging, the consumption patterns for the three resources become more intensive. The demand for water, food and energy is expected to grow by 30% - 50% in the next two decades. To effectively meet this demand, there is a global need for well-coordinated and timely management of the three resources.wfe nexus

Appreciating that water, food and energy are inextricably linked, and that actions in one area more often than not have impacts in one or both of the others, will necessitate a common approach to their management. The information upon which to base effective strategies, plans and decisions, including leading-edge input from the science-research community, must be available to the right persons at the right time and used to raise capacity of institutions so as to make sound decisions with encourage participation of all stakeholders.

Objectives

  • To enhance understanding of how the 3 sectors inter-relate and inter-depend.
  • To review the collaboration between water, energy and food sectors for sustainability
  • To identify capacity gaps, integrated planning and the implementation of water, energy and food sustainable supply, processing and use, for further research.
  • To initiate formation of a continuing platform for linkages, networking and capacity building for the three sectors
  • To publish a policy brief paper.
  • To expose the participants to existing successful projects using an integrated approach
