Arc Welding Machines
Under the Research, Development (Reverse Engineering ) and Commercialization Programme, and in collaboration with MSMIs, the Institute completed and supplied Eight Hundred and Forty (840) Arc Welding Machines for use by the Constituency Industrial Development Centres (CIDC)
Under the Research, Development (Reverse Engineering ) and Commercialization Programme, and in collaboration with MSMIs the Institute completed One Hundred and Fifty (150) Hospital Beds for distribution to Hospitals in Kenya.
Development In Collaboration with MSMIs, the Institute continues with the establishment of Mini Tanneries for Leather Processing. This is being carried out in West Pokot and Machakos Counties.
Ceramics Pilot Plant
The Institute continues to Support MSMIs, in Mukurweini, Nyeri County to establish a Ceramics Pilot Plant.
Leather Processing Technology
Research on Leather Processing Technologies has enabled the establishment of a Fish Leather Processing Pilot Plant at Kisumu, Kisumu County by the Institute.
Soya bean Processing
In collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Government of Japan, the Institute has established and operationalized three (3) Soya Bean Processing plants in Kisumu, Migori and Bungoma Counties.
The Institute has established and operationalized a Honey Processing plant in West Pokot County. The Institute has also continued to support the development of MSMIs through the Provision of Common Manufacturing Services in Processing and Packaging of Honey at the Institute’s South C Facilities
The Institute has initiated the establishment of a Tomato Processing Plant in Kirinyaga County
Green Energy Technologies
The Institute; Has developed various models of fuels efficient Gasifier Stoves for domestic use and has partnered with GIZ with funding from the Global Alliance Clean Cook Stoves (USA) to establish a National Stove Testing Centre at KIRDI.
The Institute has established and operationalized a Banana Processing Pilot Plant in Kisii County
The Institute has established Pineapple Processing Pilot Plants in Homabay and Kericho Counties
The Institute has established and operationalized a Fruit Processing Pilot Plant in Uasin-Gishu County
Extraction of Essential Oils
The Institute continues to support development and growth of MSMIs through common manufacturing services at the Institute Facilities. The Institute is also in the final phase of completion of the Natural Products Research, Technology and Innovation Laboratories at the KIRDI Western Regional Centre, Kisumu
Technology Training and Capacity Building
The Institute continues to support the development and growth of MSMIs through the provision of Technology Capacity Building Services in in following Industrial Technology Disciplines among others:
- Food Technology
- Mushroom Production
- Animal Feed Formulation
- Leather Goods Design and Manufacture
- Soap and Detergent Making
The Institute has established a Brick Making Plant in Nandi County
United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
The Institute has been appointed through the Ministry of Environment, Water and Natural Resources and the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat (UNFCCC) as the National Designated Entity (NDE) for Kenya.
KIRDI thus, is responsible for the full operationalization of the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) in Kenya and serves as the National Entity for the Development and Transfer of Technologies and Acts as Focal Point for interacting with the Climate Technology Centre (CTC), regarding requests from Developing Country Parties about their Technology Needs.
The Kenya Climate Innovation Centre (KCIC)
KIRDI partnered with; Strathmore University, Price Waterhouse Coopers and Global Village Energy Partnerships (GVEP, UK) as a Consortium, and successfully bid for the right to host the Climate Innovation Centre in Kenya, with World Bank Grant of USD 4.5 million.
World Association of Industrial and Technological Research Organizations (WAITRO)
The Institute has been appointed by the WAITRO as the Regional Focal Point for East Africa. This makes KIRDI the Coordinating Agency in ensuring intensified collaboration among the Region’s Research Technology Organizations (RTO’s), in areas of Benchmarking, Technology Foresight, Technology Needs Assessment, Incubation and adoption of the Cluster initiative for enhanced Region’s competitiveness.
Vision 2030 Flagship
The “Transformation of KIRDI into a Competitive and Reputable Research Organization is a Vision 2030 Flagship Project”. Activities initiated under this transformation include: Deliberate human capital capacity building initiatives, Attracting and retaining high calibre professionals, Upgrading the Quality and Re-focusing the Research, Technology and Innovation Programmes towards Vision 2030 aspirations, Modernization of the Institute’s Physical Infrastructure, Enhancing Collaboration and Networking, Benchmarking against successful similar Institutions and Development of a Sustainable Financial Resource Base, among others.
Cashew Nut Processing Technology
The Institute has developed different coating products from Cashew Nut shell liquid and transferred to a client at the Coast for commercial exploitation.
The Institute has developed various formulations of Animal Feeds using locally available raw materials to support MSMIs in Animal Feed Production. A low cost software package that facilitates quick processing of different low cost feed formulations is available.
Rosin and Turpentine Development from Oleoresin.
The Institute carried out investigations and designed a production plant, which has since established in Nakuru.
